My #1 rule for de-cluttering & organizing
Recently I wrote an article and video about getting organized. Personally I believe the foundation to being organized and on top of things starts with keeping your living environment clean, tidy, and clutter-free. We spend a lot of time at home, and if it’s a mess, collecting stuff, and never cleaned up, it’s really hard to think properly, make clear decisions, and feel good.
If you watched that video and read the article, and you got inspired to start organizing, cleaning, and de-cluttering your home, I have one extra tip for you!
Get rid of everything you haven’t used, looked at, or touched in the past 6-12 months!
When cleaning out your home, de-cluttering, and organizing your space; getting rid of or giving away the things you aren’t using, can have a significant impact not only on your living environment, but also on your mind and mood as well.
Having too much stuff isn’t always a good thing. In fact, having too much can easily weigh you down, and feed into a feeling of overwhelm, disorder, confusion, and a feeling of lack of control.
The rule I follow is: If I haven’t looked at it, used it, touched it, or even worn it in 6-12 months, you are much better off giving it away to someone who will. Usually the things that you haven’t used or looked at in a year, will never be used or look at. So why store it? Why let it take up space? Why not give it to someone who might enjoy it and do something with it? Why not free up that space so you can replace it with something you really want and will use?
There are of course exceptions to this rule, like memorabilia, family heirlooms, photos, prized possessions, seasonal clothing, etc. For example, you might not be looking at old photo albums all the time, but of course you’ll want to keep them. You might have childhood art work, journals, or other items you want to keep, maybe to later pass on to future generations. You’ll of course keep those things as well. You might also live somewhere where the seasons change, so you will need to store your winter clothes somewhere in your home during the summer, and vice versa.
The stuff that I’m talking about that you might be collecting and never using is clothing that is dated and doesn’t fit, kitchen appliances that you don’t use but take up space, books you never look at, old paper work you pile into closets, random things you collect that you think one day you’ll use, but never do. All that stuff just collects, takes up space, just kind of co-exists with you. Get rid of it! I promise, if you haven’t thought about it in over a year, you’re less likely to ever think about it!
Being clutter-free will free you, in many ways you aren’t even aware of!
Most people feel overwhelmed not by what they have to do, but by what is distracting them, what isn’t organized, and what’s weighing them down. A lot of this is caused simply by clutter, collecting and storing things you don’t need and never use, and putting things aside to deal with later.
The sooner you deal with that stuff, the freer and clearer you will be!
