Which Kitchen Appliance To Buy – A Blender, Juicer, Or Food Processor?

The previous blog post and video I talked all about juicers, explaining the different types of juicers available, how each one works, the pros and cons of each type of juicer, and what to look out for when buying a juicer.

Since doing the video, I’ve enjoyed reading the comments and conversations on YouTube under that video, and hearing about what appliances people prefer using.

Everyone is different. Some people are stocked with the best juicer, best blender, and best food processor, but only use their blender to make everything. Others prefer using all their appliances for everything, and some don’t use any!

If you were to ask ten people what would be the best first appliance to buy, whether it should be a juicer, blender, or food processor, I’m sure you’ll get ten different answers.

There’s some machines that work better than others, but I find what determines what appliance a person actually uses has more to do with their lifestyle and food preferences, rather than which appliance renders the best quality result.

For example, green juices. You can make a green juice with a juicer, or with a blender and strainer. In most cases I would say the juice will taste better if you make it with an actual juicer, just because if you’re using a blender, you might have to add water to get the blender working, and that dilutes the juice slightly. Also the blades are bigger in a blender, which causes more air, heat, and friction passing through the liquid, which can potentially oxidize the liquid ever so slightly.

In all, a juice made from a juicer is usually better quality and a better tasting juice than a juice made with a blender and strainer. The difference is quite subtle, and even though most people know the difference, many still prefer using a blender! And that’s because a blender is much easier and faster to use and clean up!

What’s most important when selecting an appliance to buy and use, is choosing something you’ll joyfully use, and want to use regularly. What’s most important is using something that’ll make eating healthy fun and easy.

I know for myself, I love my juicer! I love drinking green juices, and I don’t mind the extra time I have to put in to cleaning up (I actually like cleaning!). The extra effort I put into making the juices with a juicer doesn’t hold me back from making them regularly, or even daily. But for someone else, the extra clean-up and preparation could be the very thing holding them back from ever using the machine, or making a juice.

I can also say that aside from a juicer, I prefer a food processor over a blender! (I might be one of the few people who say this!). Personally, I don’t eat much puréed or liquified foods like smoothies or puréed soups, so I don’t use a blender much. But when I lived in Canada and had a food processor, and I used it almost every day. I loved making chopped salads, salsas, sauces, and dips with it. I miss it so much! (here in Bali a food processor is about four times the price of a food processor in Canada, so I’m still saving big money for one!).

In all, for some people their best investment is a blender, for others it might be a juicer, or a food processor, or all three. If you’re trying to decide, ask yourself what appliance would you use most often? Do you like cleaning up, or no? Also, look at what foods or drinks you buy most often at restaurants, cafés, and juice bars. If you’re always buying take-away green or vegetable juice or wheatgrass than buying a juicer would probably be the best choice, but if your always buying smoothies or blended drinks, a blender is better!
