Annmarie Gianni Skin Care – SUN LOVE Sun Protection Review

I am super excited to do this product review of Annmarie Gianni Skin Care sunscreen: Sun Love

Being a fair-skined Canadian living in Bali, Indonesia, I’m constantly looking for a non-toxic, safe sunscreen that I can wear regularly, and doesn’t leave me with a thick, white, oily cast.

If you’ve tried any of the non-toxic sunscreens known as “physical sunscreens” available these days, you probably know what I’m talking about. These mineral-based sunscreens (made with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) rest on the surface of the skin to block UVA and UVB rays from penetrating the skin. They do a great job protecting the skin, but unfortunately, majority of these sunscreens feel awful to wear. They are heavy, oily, not very breathable, sometimes chalky, and for some people like me, they can cause terrible pimples, breakouts, even rashes and hives.

Because my skin can react so badly to sunscreens, I normally dread wearing them, and in fact for many years I went without wearing any sunscreen (I’m sure I’ve mentioned this many times on my blog before!). Here in Bali, I used to organize my days that I wouldn’t go outside between 9am-3pm, so I wouldn’t have to wear sunscreen or get burned. But after giving birth to my daughter Luna Ray, my whole schedule changed, and we’re regularly going outside during peak sun hours.

So I needed to find a solution, and fast. I don’t mind wearing the heavy sunscreens at the beach, because even though they might not look good, they do work, and they are safe. But during the day when I’m walking around or going places, I need a sunscreen that isn’t visible, that isn’t irritating my skin, that’s definitely not giving me pimples, and is protecting me from getting burnt and from sun damage. Living in Indonesia, we’re right near the equator, the sun is STRONG! And let’s just say I’ve tried MANY sunscreens, both physical sunscreens and even at times, chemical sunscreens, and unfortunately majority don’t react well with my skin.

I have to say, when I received a sample of Sun Love by Annmarie Gianni Skin Care, I fell in love instantly! Words can’t express the relief of finally finding a sunscreen that is good quality, safe, non-toxic, and most importantly looks and feels good on my skin!!!

What’s even better is Sun Love is coming from a brand that isn’t playing around. We know there’s a lot of “green washing” out there, brands and product lines that claim their products are non-toxic and all natural, and they’re not, there’s hidden chemicals and toxic ingredients in the preservatives and formulas. Annmarie Gianni Skin Care does their homework to ensure all their products are natural and made with the highest quality ingredients. I love this because I can trust what I am buying from them, and everything has been made with the utmost care. If you followed Annmarie and her husband Kevin Gianni on Renegade Health, you know that everything they do and stand for is with honesty and integrity.

Annmarie Gianni Skin Care - Sun Love Review -

What I love about Sun Love:

Non-oily, non-greasy, and extremely light weight

I was surprised how light weight this sunscreen is, which makes it comfortable to wear, and perfect for summer weather as well. No one wants a heavy sunscreen on their face, especially when it’s hot out, right?!

I was even more delighted that it’s not oily, in fact I would say the consistency of the sunscreen is more like a gel. I have oily/combination skin that is also maturing and acne-prone, and I’ve tried wearing the Sun Love on both clean bare skin, and also with a moisturizer and eye cream underneath. I have to say I prefer wearing a moisturizer and eye cream underneath because I have fine lines around my eyes, and the moisturizer and eye cream fills them in and make it’s easier to apply the Sun Love sunscreen on top. I find without the moisturizer and eye cream underneath, my skin feels a little tight with just the Sun Love, and my winkles are more visible.

I have to say that I really like that Sun Love is just a sunscreen, and not a two-in-one sunscreen and moisturizer because this allows me to pick and choose what moisturizer, serum or oil I want to wear underneath it. My skin texture does changes from day to day, sometimes I need more hydration or moisture than other days, and when I travel to different places that have different climates and temperatures, I can adjust the moisture levels accordingly, and still use the sunscreen on top.

Can even be re-applied throughout the day without weighing on my skin

Sun Love is super light-weight. I would say it’s one of the most light weight sunscreens I’ve tried!

One thing that a lot of people over look with sunscreen is it needs to be re-applied throughout the day. Both physical and chemical sunscreens need to be re-applied every 2-3 hours. The problem with so many sunscreens is the first layer is heavy enough, the last thing you want to do is reapply another heavy layer! But with Sun Love, it’s light enough that applying a second or third layer throughout the day won’t weigh your skin down, or feel too heavy, or too built up. This is really important, especially if you wear sunscreen regularly, you don’t want to be wearing something that makes you feel like your skin is suffocating, or overly coated with products.

It’s tinted, perfectly blends into my skin, and absolutely no chalky residue!

What actually got me interested in Sun Love was it was tinted. That was the selling point for me to want to try it. I’ve tried so many white, non-toxic sunscreens, I can predict the results! That’s a given. Anyone who’s tried most mineral-based white sunscreens knows that it will sit on the surface of your skin, and give you either a chalky white cast or a thick oily white cast, and one way or another, you can’t avoid the whiteness of that stuff. And the white sunscreen is fine for the beach, I have no problem with that, but walking around in my daily life, there’s no way I’m walking around with that heavy stuff all over my face!

So I was excited to try Sun Love out. I have to admit that when I received the sample, and opened the little jar I was nervous about the shade. My skin tone is fair, with yellow undertones, and this one looked to have a more rose or pink undertone. Luckily, it blends into the skin perfectly. Even though it appears to be tinted, it’s definitely not heavily pigmented like a foundation or make-up, and therefore even though in the jar it doesn’t seem to match my skin tone, once applied, it’s blends right in.

Sun Love is 18% Zinc Oxide. Zinc is always better for acne prone skin!

The active ingredients in Sun Love is zinc oxide, which I’m happy about. Out of zinc oxide or titanium dioxide which is used in physical, non-toxic sunscreens, zinc oxide is always the better ingredient for acne prone skin, and offers full broad spectrum protection from UVA and UVB rays. I know for some people with acne, zinc can actually help them heal their skin. For myself, I do prefer zinc oxide over titanium dioxide in a sunscreen, and I tend not to break out from it.

One thing to mention about Sun Love, is it’s not SPF rated. It is 18% zinc oxide, which is a good coverage, but if you are wondering what that translates to SPF-wise, and why there is no SPF rating, read Annmarie Gianni’s explanation here.

It’s a perfect coverage for day to day activities

Sun Love is not waterproof or water resistant. I actually like this! If it was waterproof or water resistant than the formula would automatically be different, it would probably become a heavier, greasier sunscreen like the others on the market.

Personally, I prefer having one sunscreen I use for my day to day life, and another that is just used for the beach, exercising outdoors, or those time where I know I need extra sun protection due to spending more time than usual outdoors and under direct sunlight. I see no reason to be wearing heavy waterproof sunscreen when I’m just running errands, and therefore I much rather have a non-water proof lightweight option, and I’m so grateful to find Sun Love!
