How to stop binge eating? – This is a question I am frequently asked and hired to coach people through. I have to say this is something I feel very passionate about, mainly because I have personally witnessed so many people get to the other side, and free themselves completely of compulsive overeating. Anyone that has been in the throes of binge eating knows just how devastating it can be, not only physically, but mentally, and emotionally as well, and the deeper someone is in it, the more compelled they are to try and control it.
Unfortunately trying to control it, especially through dieting, fasting, and doing cleanses, just doesn’t work. I would go as far as to say it actually makes it terribly worse. Majority of people I’ve encountered that binge would easily admit that while they are bingeing on food they are simultaneously planning their next diet, cleanse, or fast, many times telling themselves “Tomorrow I’ll start over!” or “Tomorrow I’ll never eat this junk again, this is the last time!” And then the cycle of bingeing and starving begins, swinging from one extreme to the other, and back again.
My strongest recommendation to anyone dealing with binge eating is to go an entire year without any dieting, cleanses, or fasting. Make one rule for yourself, no matter how bad the binge is, you will not resort to dieting or fasting to “fix it.” Because honestly, dieting and fasting will not fix the behaviour, in fact over time, it only makes it worse.
You might find that at first it’s feels daunting to not be allowed to fall back on dieting and fasting, perhaps downright scary, but over time what ends up happening to people in this situation is instead of “sweeping the binge under the carpet,” they have to face it, and by facing it, you are feeling it, taking responsibility for it, and eventually, it naturally just might not be worth all the pain, discomfort, and self-loathing that comes with it.
